Crews fight back against latest storm, but power lines may be stressed.

By MOLLY SPENCER FRANKEL Freezing rain glazed over a layer of compacted sleet Sunday afternoon, creating slippery conditions in Columbia and Boone County during round three of a prolonged bout with messy winter weather.

Public works crews continued to fight back Sunday and managed to get a little ahead of the weather during a lull in the precipitation early Sunday.

Diagnosis of Hinkson Creek uncertain

A basic disagreement is emerging between development and environmental interests in Boone County over whether parts of Hinkson Creek should remain on the state’s list of impaired waterways.

A chief under fire

Lawsuits, an FBI investigation and accounting mistakes have put the fire district and Steve Paulsell uncomfortably in the spotlight.

Observers say these problems have put Paulsell’s job at risk, but the chief insists that the district is running better than ever and that he’s here to stay.
